DIY Home Solar System: 4000W Inverter + Complete Parts List
Running AC, fridge, microwave, and TV at the same time? A 4000W inverter handles it all. What parts do you need? How to wire it? Read on.
1. Why 4000W? Do the math
Typical home appliance power consumption:
| Appliance | Running Power |
|---|---|
| 1.5 HP AC | 1500W |
| Microwave | 1200W |
| Refrigerator | 200W |
| TV + computer | 300W |
| Whole house lighting | 100W |
Running AC + microwave + fridge + TV at the same time → ~3000W total.
But the AC has a surge current (2-3x running power) that can reach 4500W. A 3000W inverter may struggle. The 4000W inverter (8000W surge) handles it easily – and you can still run an extra rice cooker or hair dryer.
Bottom line: For home off-grid systems, choose a 4000W pure sine wave inverter. Leave yourself headroom and never regret it.
2. Four core components
| Component | Recommended Spec | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Inverter | 4000W pure sine wave (24V/48V) | Must be pure sine wave |
| Lithium battery | 400Ah+ (12V) | LiFePO4, 80% usable |
| Solar panels | 3000W–5000W | Monocrystalline, cover your roof |
| MPPT controller | 100A–150A | Harvests 30% more than PWM |
3. Additional parts
-
Solar mounting brackets + MC4 connectors
-
PV cable (4mm² or 6mm²)
-
Battery cable (25mm² or thicker copper)
-
DC breaker + fuse (near battery positive terminal)
-
AC distribution box + grounding rod and wire
4. Installation steps (5 steps)
⚠️ Follow this exact order – reversing it can damage equipment.
Step 1: Mount the solar panels
Choose an unshaded roof, face south (northern hemisphere), tilt properly, secure brackets, and ground the frame.
Step 2: Install the lithium battery bank
Place in a dry, ventilated area. Connect the battery bank first (do NOT connect to inverter yet).
Step 3: Wiring (strict order)
-
Battery → MPPT controller
-
Solar panels → MPPT controller
-
Battery → 4000W inverter (use 25mm²+ thick copper cable)
-
Inverter AC output → home AC distribution box
Step 4: Test
Use a multimeter to check voltage. Turn on the breaker, power up, and test with AC + microwave.
Step 5: Have a licensed electrician inspect the AC side (if connected to grid)
5. One‑page cheat sheet
